Tapping

Tapping is a great technique that can really spice up your playing by enabling you to play note sequences that would normally be impossible or at least extremely difficult. To execute a tap, simply use your middle finger (or whichever finger feels comfortable, but the middle finger enables you to remain holding the pick normally) to tap vertically down onto the string at the designated fret (hammer on), and then flick your finger up/down to release the string (pull-off) to sound the note where your fretting hand is positioned.
As always, start slow before building up speed and you should find this technique relatively easy to get the hang of. However it is one of those that will take years to master, as you can progress to multi-finger tapping.
